Shona is a wildlife vet with an unusual vehicle – because the patients who need her live so far apart, she travels to work in her bright red helicopter.

In this rhyming adventure story, we take a whistle-stop tour of Scotland and meet some of its most iconic wildlife, including a trapped red deer stag, an entangled dolphin, and a puffin with a broken wing. Luckily, Shona is more than happy to get hands on to help them – even if that means swimming in Spey Bay, or climbing in the Cairngorms.
As with many appealing picture books, there is a loveable sidekick keeping the hero company on her travels. In this case, it is Shona’s cute little dog, Jock.
Young wildlife-lovers are bound to enjoy this gentle, upbeat book with well-written rhyme that lends itself to being read again and again.
Alongside the outdoor fun, the story highlights some of the dangers, like marine litter, that our wild creatures face. Shona’s compassion for each animal she meets is evident, and perhaps unsurprising, as its author is a vet herself.
